How dropshipping works for Shopify brands (and how to run your own network)
Most articles about dropshipping are written for the retailer — the person looking for products to sell. This one is for the other side of the deal: you, the brand that already owns the products. If you run a Shopify store with real inventory, you can turn your catalog into a dropshipping program that other stores resell for you — and you keep the brand, the pricing, and the margin.
The two sides of dropshipping
In any dropship relationship there are two parties: the supplier (owns the products and ships them) and the retailer (markets and sells, but never holds stock). When a retailer makes a sale, the order is passed to the supplier, who ships it directly to the customer.
As a brand, you're the supplier. That's the valuable seat: you already have the products, the photos, and the stock. A dropshipping network simply lets many retailers sell for you at once.
How the flow works, step by step
- 1. Connect your Shopify store. Your catalog — products, variants, images, and real-time stock — becomes the single source of truth.
- 2. Set your terms. You decide the wholesale/retail split (your margin) and the subscription tiers retailers pay to access your catalog.
- 3. Invite retailers. Each retailer installs, imports your products into their own Shopify store, and sells at your suggested retail price.
- 4. Orders route back to you. When a retailer sells, the order flows to you for fulfillment automatically — you ship from your own stock.
- 5. Inventory and tracking sync both ways. Stock levels and tracking numbers stay in sync so nobody oversells and every customer gets updates.
Why keep it under your own brand?
Generic dropshipping makes your products interchangeable with everyone else's. A white-label program keeps your name, logo, and pricing in front of every retailer and every buyer. Retailers become an extension of your brand rather than a race to the bottom on price. (More on that in white-label vs. generic dropshipping.)
What it takes to start
You need three things: a Shopify store with stock you can ship reliably, a suggested retail price that leaves room for a retailer margin, and a way to invite and manage retailers. That last part is exactly what Drop-USA handles — locations, shipping profiles, quotas, branding, and order routing are set up for you, no code required.
